The Story Behind the Gills

Frost-Bite came to us as Axel, and is one of the founding axolotl’s behind the ides of YYC Axolotl Sanitary. We chose the name Frost-Bite as my younger daughter wanted something “Frozen” themed but also because of his freckling pattern.

Fortunately for Axel, he had a very loving and knowledgeable owner, who was moving and not able to take her along. He wanted to ensure he was going to a safe home, that would take good care of him and keep him happy. We welcomed him with an open tank and a lot of excitement as he is a morph we didn’t currently have in our harem! Because Axel is a confirmed male, he was and still is in his own tank to avoid any accidental clutches.

Since welcoming Axel, we noticed just like our other axies, he has a very unique personality! When we first brought him home and got him back in his tank we were very worried as he never left his hide. If we entered the room, any shift in lighting or sounds, we noticed he would retreat further into the hide. Because he was still eating and we could see him moving around the tank on a camera in the room, we let him be for the time. Time was a blessing and Axel slowly came out of his shell. Now, he is very interactive with us and will come get a through the glass nose boop! He is a great eater for me and seemingly prefers wigglers to crawlers. Like Alice, he doesn’t seem to like swimming around too much, but I have noticed he does like to climb, so we have included more reptile hides he can easily climb and explore. Of all our axies he is by far the most reserved, he reminds us that not every personality needs to be loud to shine.
